Comparative characteristics of modes of transport

We would like to consider the main advantages and disadvantages of road, rail, water and air transport, which are important in terms of logistics.

Automobile transport.  Traditionally used for short distances.  One of the main advantages is high maneuverability.  With the help of road transport, the cargo can be delivered "door to door" with the required degree of urgency.  This type of transport provides regular delivery, as well as the possibility of delivery in small batches.  The requirements for packaging are less stringent than for other types.

The main disadvantage of road transport is the relatively high cost of transport, which is usually calculated based on the maximum load capacity of the vehicle.  Other disadvantages of this type of transport include the frequency of unloading, the likelihood of theft and theft of vehicles, relatively low productivity.  Road transport is environmentally unsafe, which limits its use.

Railway transport.  This type of transport is very convenient for the transportation of various goods in all weather conditions.  Rail transport provides faster delivery of goods over long distances.  Transport is regular.  Here you can quickly organize the execution of loading and unloading operations.

An important advantage of rail transport is the relatively low cost of transporting goods, as well as discounts.

The disadvantages of rail transport are the limited number of carriers, as well as the low availability of delivery to consumption points, i.e.  in the absence of access roads, rail transport should be supplemented by road transport.

Sea transport.  It is the largest carrier in the field of international transportation.  Its main advantages are low freight rates and high carrying capacity.

The disadvantages of maritime transport include its low speed, strict requirements for packaging and safety of cargo, low frequency of transportation.  Maritime transport significantly depends on weather and navigation conditions and requires the creation of a complex port infrastructure.

Air Transport.  The main advantages are the highest speed, the ability to reach remote countries and regions, and the high safety of goods.

The disadvantages include high freight rates and dependence on weather conditions, which reduces the reliability of meeting the delivery schedule.
